I ask the student what they have been taught at school and prepare a lesson plan in advance, to follow the school curriculum. The plan has broad sections such as

* greeting, warm up
* review of homework
* new material presentation or summary - as needed (see below the explanation)
* sentence examples, with the help of the student
* basic quiz of the new material -- this may be in the form of a game or similar
* examples for student to practice on their own
* review and discussion
* homework for next time

I present the material on a whiteboard, with as much detail as necessary for the student to understand. This is supported by simple sentences where target language is used. I also compare the use with other language structures (already familiar to the student - previously taught).
Depending on student age, I present pictures and/or situations.
