I have devoted my entire life to linguistics, chiefly to the English language, and was a technical interpreter/translator for more than 15 years. Apart from translating/interpreting, ever since I entered the university, I have been teaching English to schoolchildren, university students, adults, both individually and in groups. Back at Cyprus International University where I got my MA degree, I chose to take a course on teaching English to young learners, because by that time my interest in teaching had significantly grown, so I wanted to add something fresh, new, and fundamental to the knowledge I had obtained on my own. When I became a corporate English teacher at one of the Russian branches of Schneider Electric, I was surprised to reveal there was no significant difference between children and adults in terms of language acquisition. Just to prove my point: games were my students’ favourite activity during the whole three years I spent teaching them. My individual students had very specific targets: to feel more comfortable at work, to take and pass IELTS or TOEFL, to prepare for a job interview, to move to the USA or Great Britain, to enter a university etc. It is part of what I truly love about the activity - I know I can be quite useful to my students. Apart from being target-oriented I also consider myself a differentiation-led teacher, for example, I try to take into account my students’ psychological peculiarities. Just to illustrate, I would never urge an introvert to speak, I always try to create circumstances under which it would be most comfortable for them to express what is on their mind – for example, I would most probably ask a shy person a question only being fully sure they know the answer. There is also an issue with the people who speak really well – some of them tend to neglect grammatical nuances – so I would focus on that with this type of students. I will not be wrong if I say that Finland is very famous for the quality of education the country provides. That is why I entered the University of Helsinki to study pedagogy, after which I took the Advanced Studies in English Course from the University of Jyväskylä. With more than 15 years of experience in linguistics I am positive I have got what it takes to successfully teach students English. Thank you very much for your time.
