I begin with a short discussion-based exploration of the students level. Depending upon how in-depth the student goes in their answers, I will deepen the discussion. From there, I will ask them structured questions about what it is they want to achieve from their lessons. This is give me a sense for what kinds of subject material I will want to put together. These two preliminary discussions are key to the development of any lesson plan. Depending upon the level of the lesson, and the subject matter they are most interested in, I will then build a plan with these basic elements: 1. A subject-driven vocabulary list is established at the start of each lesson. Students will be required to develop definitions, sentences, and alternative uses for each word. 2. Video and audio responses. This exercise is about developing the ability to think critically and clearly in the language. The video or audio recording that I use will be dicated by the level of language ability of the student. For example: a very strong student might get a short video about a political event, and they will need to describe the event and give me their informed opinion. A lover level student maight get a recorded coversation between two people and then need to describe what is happening in the conversation, picking out important words. 3. Writing. All of my students are required to write - pen to paper, the old fashioned way - in every lesson. Sometimes this will be homework, and other times, it will be a short written response to a question. 4. Every lesson ends with a short review and a preview of what the next lesson will attend to.
